Internet in Library Services | Used, Importance, Tools of the Internet in Library Services
Internet is a joint network of thousands of millions of independent networks, in which each network is connected through a means by which it exchanges information with other networks. Normally information and data are exchanged by the Internet.
The
emergence and development of the Internet - The Internet originated in 1970 in
a Network called "ARPANET" developed by ARPA (Advanced Research
Projects Agency).
It was first
used to transfer information under the U.S. Department of Defense and was later
adopted by the educational community in the creation of educational networks
for the exchange of information.
Net access
became accessible to the public in the year 1980 as Netwerk Technology used
Ethernet for client servers and LANs making it easy for users to
access the networks.
In the 1990s The Internet was created by combining 60000 Networks. The basic description of the
Internet is described as "Network of Networks" which acts as a
cooperative with minimal supervision.
The
participating networks agree to common protocols and rules and have no authorized charge or control.
The Internet is a world-class network structure built in conjunction with
the majority Computer Network." In technical parlance, "the Internet
is a large, search-facilitated, dynamic, widely available, distributed
multi-platform information system with multiple Has normal capabilities.
Internet Use in Library Services |
There are two specific parts related to the internet
(1)
Communication Network - A communication network that is a vast network of
interconnected local area and wide area networks (WAN), telephone lines,
cables, fiber-optics, and satellite links, which provide a medium for
transferring information from the Internet. Let's make it happen.
(2) Computer
- which actually collects data and modifies it which is available for network
transmission.
Tools of Internet
The following are the main tools of the Internet:
(i) E-mail -
This is the most used application. The biggest reason for being attracted to it
is its speed. It is more powerful than paper mail. Documents, Programme,
Photos and Sound can be easily communicated through e-mail.
(ii) FTP
(File Transfer Protocol) - This allows users to access and retrieve files to
remote locations.
(iii) Telnet
- Telnet is an important application of this. This is a device through which we
can reach the door of another network.
(iv) Usenet
- Usenet provides us with the facility through which messages can be sent to a
specific person or group.
(v) WWW
(World Wide Web) - WWW is a multimedia part of the Internet that displays Hyper
Text type of structure and search facilities.
Importance of the Internet in Library Service
In modern
times, Internet technology is being used by libraries to provide information
access to their consumers. Libraries are facilitating many services through the
Internet. This is how we can see the importance of the Internet in library
service.
(1) Document
distribution - Many libraries are providing document discovery and distribution
services through the Internet. The Internet is a powerful medium in the
document delivery area and this allows users to easily access documents through
libraries.
(2) Library
catalog - Most of the libraries are providing their obstetricians through the
internet, OPAC is important in this type of service. Through this, the Library catalog is easily available to the user and is a convenience to the user.
(3)
Connection of remote information - Remote information is used by the Internet
and connection with information sources is established globally. Thus the
library makes resource participation easier.
(4)
Commercial transactions - Many types of shopping and commercial transactions
can be done on the Internet. Through the Internet, the selection of books,
purchases by the library becomes easy. E-commerce is its major medium.
(5)
Community information - Different communities are often providing access to
information through their public libraries such as library catalogs, tourism
information, etc. The Internet is playing an important role in this.
(6) Message
exchange - Message can be easily exchanged in the user and library through
E-mail. Through this, the reservation of books and inter-library loan facility
is available.
(7) For an
update - Both libraries and users can remain updated through the internet. And
you can use it by connecting documents.
(8) Home
page combination - Home pages are combined with electronic text databases and
other Internet resources by libraries. This makes it easier to provide
information services.
Conclusion -
Thus we see that considerable development of library service is possible using
the Internet. Several directories are available to guide the proper use of
Internet resources in libraries.
The most important directory in it is "BUBL: Bulletin Board for Libraries".
BUBL is an information service designed to provide strength to library and
information professionals. Through this, Internet resources can be used
efficiently by libraries.
