What is Tracing | Define Tracing | Tracing in Library Science
Tracing in Library Cataloguing - The first task of the library is to make available to the readers their desired books.
Also, the Library Catalog plays a major role in preserving the five laws of library science and in doing this work.
Two types of
entries are made for library catalog work, one main entry, and the other
non-entry.
The titles of the non-entry entries are placed in the main entry.
Describing the main information of other entries in the main entries is called
Tracing.
This is an
important work in which it is known how many helpful entries have been made of
the main entries and this helps the library staff to convey information to the
readers.
The reader
wants to explore any book from different dimensions. If someone remembers the
author's name, he would like to search with the author.
If someone remembers
the legend, he would like to search through the legend; Someone wants to search
by topic. In this way, different entries of a single book are made keeping in
mind the different approaches of the readers.
The tracing the function is usually done to assist the library staff so that the employees know
how many other entries have been made and where the main entry But readers also
get the benefit of tracing.
The tracing
work is performed at the bottom of the entries made according to A ACR-II,
followed by the note section and the main entries made according to the CCC to
the back of the card.
Thus we see that tracing is given an important place in
entries made in both AACR-II and CCC.
